Laos in Focus

Anyone who has a love of travel and a sense of adventure will adore Laos.   Laos still retains an air of romantic mystique, and most people immediately point to the enchanting town of Luang Prabang, which conjures up images of ornate temples, old colonial buildings and saffron robed monks.

Look beyond this, and you will find a captivating and beautiful country filled with jaw dropping paddy fields and mountain scenery, cascading waterfalls and remote ethnic minority villages, all bonded together by the mighty Mekong River, the lifeblood of the country.

Traditional customs are still an important part of everyday Lao life, and it's refreshing to visit a country to experience this, whether the sight of monks collecting alms in the morning, or the hustle and bustle of locals shopping at the local market, or ordering their dinner from a roadside food stall.

The one lasting impression for most visitors is of the Lao people and their overwhelming friendliness. Come to Laos and you will be made to feel welcome by everyone.  Don't be surprised if you find yourself being invited into peoples homes, for meals, even for weddings, Lao people love to share and treat visitors to their country as honoured guests.

Having spoken to many happy clients over the years, we at Nakarath lose track of the number of times travellers tell us how amazing their time in Laos was, how they wished they could have stayed longer, and how, most definitely, one day, they will return.

Responsible Travel

Nakarath takes Responsible Travel seriously, we believe that everything we do (as detailed below) should be standard practice for all tour operators in Laos. The advantages are two fold, as not only does it help to ensure the long term benefits of the local communities and the country as a whole, but it actually enhances the amazing experience of visiting Laos for our clients.

  • c

    Economic Responsibility

Many of the hotels we use are locally owned and channel their profits back into the local community or local environment. We encourage our clients to experience different foods and restaurants by themselves, and we feel this not only enhances their experience, but also the wealth is distributed more widely to the local people. We also encourage interactive and educational activities. One excellent example of this is an excursion we offer that involves teaching English to local children in a remote, rarely visited village just outside of Luang Prabang.

  • b

    Environmental Responsibility

Within our office, our staff work on paperless desks, keeping as much information as possible stored electronically, quite rare for tour company within a developing country, but this helps to cut down on unnecessary use of paper. When we organize tours outside the cities, we often involve the Ecotourism Laos initiative (see above) where careful consideration is given towards the environment  itself and minimizing damage. Our suggested tour programmes include the use of Eco Lodges with strong environmental policies.  A specific example of this us the Kingfisher Eco Lodge in Champasak Province, southern Laos.

  • d

    Social Responsibility

We train our guides to advise clients on the cultural aspects of the country so that we are always considerate to the local way of life and customs, covering things such as appropriate conduct in temples and village visits. It is our policy to always contribute something to everywhere we visit, especially the sometimes more sensitive issue of visiting small villages, which forms an integral part of many of our suggested programmes.  We make donations, such as clothes (especially appreciated in the winter months), and encourage donations of pens and books for schools.
